Abegon History

A. Abecasis Gonzalez Ltd is a family run business, already in its fourth generation and was founded by Alfredo Abecasis-Gonzalez (b. 1890 – d. 1972) before the Second World War. It was incorporated as a Limited Company in August 1963.

Originally wholesaling foodstuffs (Honig), wrapping paper, codfish and household goods, Abecasis Gonzalez have had to diversify and adapt to changing and growing needs. In the early 80s, we expanded the sideline of retailing traditional floor coverings and successfully developed the home-décor business all from our traditional premises in City Mill Lane. (see left)

A move to larger premises at New Harbours Industrial Estate in 1998 proved crucial in our growth and our Flooring & Furniture business naturally required an additional Refurbishment service which meant an increase in crew from 4 to 12 and from 1 delivery van to 4. This saw the birth of Abegon Fitters Ltd.

By splitting the Flooring & Furniture and the Refurbishment operations to work from two separate outlets we were able to specialise in both specific trades and so provide the best service to our customers and we obtained an additional unit at Europa Business Centre which is where Abegon Fitters operated from.

A. Abecasis Gonzalez Ltd specialised in Home & Office Furniture, Mattresses and the supply and fitting of all types of Flooring. In 2007 we also took on the additional challenge of installing kitchens which has proved extremely successful. Abegon Fitters Ltd concentrated on Refurbishments and on the flooring. They also underwent small contractual works and property maintenance. They managed to become an ‘Approved Contractor’ for the G.G.C.C. and carried out a number of refurbs for the Government of Gibraltar. However, the Abegon Fitters crew decided to set up on their own in 2015 in a true spirit of entrepreneurship, under the new name of A & C Fitters Ltd and are now totally independent of us.

Abecasis Gonzalez Ltd have now down-sized in order to become even more efficient and we have moved down the road to Unit 39, but still in New Harbours. In keeping with current business practices, we have committed ourselves to improve our website and develop and concentrate on Social Media in order to be more accessible to the modern shopper.

Our aim is to provide personal attention and meet customers’ requirements with efficiency at a reasonable price by dealing only with the most reputable and efficient manufacturers and suppliers in the market. We thrive on a foundation of uncompromising commitment, providing an unrivalled after-sales service for existing and potential customers.
